RESUMO

This work, situated within Angola, specifically within the peri-urban areas of Luanda, in a context characterised by war and poverty, looks at social initiatives occurring in the present time. In essence, this work deals with the work of the social educator in Angolan society. In prioritising this theme, the central objective is to study the actions of social educators from a human rights ethical perspective, seeking to learn the significance of this work for the population. Within this perspective, the guiding questions are: what is the significance of the social educator? What are the changes that must happen? How does one make the building of human rights possible, and direct our reflection on the information obtained from what is said by research subjects, and institutions: Action for Rural and Environmental Development (ADRA), Mosaiko Cultural Centre, The Arnaldo Janssen Home of Welcome, The Main Military Hospital, and the Ministry for Social Reintegration and Assistance. The use of qualitative methods such as observation and interviews, in conjunction with documented research, facilitated significant approximation and better understanding of the day to day life of these subjects. At the end of this work, the activities of these social workers are found to be necessary and seen as a positive experience for those involved.
