RESUMO

This thesis is an attempt to understand the material needs and the symbolic meanings which demanded some retired people to be engaged in work again. Middle-class public employees, male and female, were interviwed in Salvador-Bahia. Their ages ranged from 52 to 76 and they perform distinctive fields, such as education, business and health. Qualitative research carried out through interviews was based on the assumption that the interviewees were back in work to achieve different scopes: improve their economical living conditions, give the family some support and also have a busy life in the social context. The collected data show the different ways these retirees are now back in work. Some jobs have a formal contract of employment but others are informal jobs.
