O senhor da pedra: os usos da memÃria Delmiro Gouveia (1940-1980)

RESUMO

A lot memories have been produced about Delmiro Gouveia. This research proposes analyse some of these works, observing how was established the history capitalist born in 1863, in Ipu, Cearà and killed by shots in Pedra, Alagoas backlands. Leather exporter known in Recife as the King of Pelts, Delmiro was target of conversations, events, biographies, fictions, plays and movies. This way, investigate as elaboration of these different supports of memories, like its relations with the main undertaking of cearense, considering its appropriations, metamorphoses and permanence in conception of a modernization myth. He was a dealer of diversificates and polemics investments - like the Mercado do Derby (1899- 1900), in Recife, the hydroelectric usine of Angiquinho in Paulo Afonso, Bahia, build in 1913 and the sewing factory founded in Pedra in 1914, Delmiro was utilized as icon in different moments of Brazil history. A series of complex arrangement can be perceived around 1940, when discussions about the energetic utilization of Baixo SÃo Francisco amplified - times there werenât only one workmanship dedicated to Delmiro, and in 1980 when the colonel already accumulated a lot of biographies -, epoch that he already appears consolidated as martyr of national industry against the foreigner trusts. For intellectual like Assis Chateaubriand and Oliveira Lima, Gouveia was considered a put against at delay of backlands: He was said as a disciplinary by MÃrio de Andrade and Graciliano Ramos; he was elected exemplar of national bourgeoisie lead by communist like OctÃvio BrandÃo and Pedro Motta Lima. In Recife, one of his houses was choose by Gilberto Freyre to be the headquarters of Social Research Joaquim Nabuco Institute. He was lapidated by researchers like Mauro Mota, Paulo Dantas, Francisco MagalhÃes Martins, Tadeu Rocha and Adalberon Lins, the âColonel of the colonelsâ became a myth such a civilizer, such a pioneer and industrial. For this being possible, the celebration of his centennial born happened in Pernambuco and Alagoas, in 1963, it was basic. Such commemorations that should combat a pretentious âofficial silentâ imposed to the workmanshipâs Delmiro influencered biographies and others productions about the âlord of Pedraâ not only in the temporary, but along the years 1960 and 1970. Through these interventions in the memories, by careful destructionâs aspects of personage his violents actions, his illicit business, his relations with oligarquias, the rigid control about the day by day of his employed, among other things â expected delimit to Gouveia a place in the national history
