RESUMO

This work suggests the inclusion of gerontological and geriatric contents in the course disciplines, so that the physiotherapist is trained to provide assistance to this growing sector of the population. Although the National Curricular guidelines for courses in Physiotherapy do not define the specific area of the elderly, this professional should be capable of carrying out actions of prevention, promotion, protection, recovery and rehabilitation of health, both at individual and collective levels, in the private and public sectors. Despite the existing legislation, the importance of these subjects for society is still not clear. Based on this context, a case study was carried out involving the Graduate Program in Physiotherapy at UNIVALI, seeking to identify and analyze the curricular practices relating to the human ageing process and health of the elderly. The investigation was carried out in three stages: The first consisted of the identification and analysis of the teaching curriculum of the course, including its curricular matrix and the teaching plans for the disciplines, up to the 7th period. This was followed by the identification and analysis of the Course Conclusion Works (CCWs) for the year 2006 which addressed the process of ageing and health of the elderly, and finally, the identification and analysis of extension projects on this theme, including the participation of the Physiotherapy Course with its students on these projects. Of the 54 teaching plans analyzed, only four disciplines were found which use the terminology idoso (elderly) and the process of human ageing, representing a total of 117 class hours. The other disciplines addressed infirmities that could be related to the elderly, representing 311 class hours. In relation to the CCWs, only one was found which addressed the health of the elderly, and in the extension projects, only one project was found with this theme, to which the course participated together with its students. Through this study, it can be seen that the course is geared more towards clinical practice than gerontology, and that the latter enables the students the to realize the confluence of various fields of knowledge and separate sectors indicated in the PNI and PNSPI and in the need for interdisciplinary work
