RESUMO

The main concem of this theses is to point out the importance of images as source of knowledge, putting them in the same plane as the study of the religious texts, standing out their specific fundamental value, not only as simple illustration of concepts and theories. For Hinduism the art s images are full of religious meaning. They are present in the poetic language of myths, tales and legends and are translated to the fine arts (sculpter, painting, architecture) as icons and temples. These images allows not only the understanding of divinity s nature, but algo make possible the experience of transformation of consciousness through rituaIs wich seek for liberation (moksha), the supreme goal of hindu religiosity. The object of study chosen was the hindu temple, more specificly the temple Kandarya Mahadeva, located at Khajuraho, Central India, buildt on XI century by Chandella s dinasty. This temple, dedicated to Shiva, is considered the summit of hindu medieval architecture and may be conceived as a paradigmatic model of the hindu temple in general. The theoretical reference adopted for the temple s reading is that of Analitical Psychology since it, as well as Hinduism, gives a great importance to images because they express, beyond the individual psyche, the archetypal psyche, wich is present culturally in mythology, arts and religion. Through this analysis is possible to observe that the hindu temple s art besides express the philosophical and religious principIes of Hinduism, algo can be readed under the archetypical perspective of the Analitical Psychology. The temple s images allows the ritual experience of the religious concepts through the symbols wich express the various pattems of consciousness described by jungian psychology. The methodological procedures has included a bibliographycal research and studies of texts of Hinduism, art of India and a more detailed approach about the hindu temple, folowedby an analysis of the temple under the prism of the Analitical Psychology, and finishing with a dialogue between the two adopted references, the hindu and the jungian approach, in arder to demonstrate along the work, the richness of the knowledge attainedby the study of the images
