RESUMO

The work of the director of state public school of São Paulo is the focus of the reflections realized, with the objective to study the existing relation between the work of the school director and the function that is attributed to him by the functional legislation, it means, for the rules of law that establish his attributions and competencies that defines parameters for his performance. It was analyzed in what measure the performance of the directors approaches or distances to the profile that the rules of law disclose as desirable for the State to the occupant of this position, making a comparison between what exists established clearly - the rule - and the approach or distances of this. According to the "occupation" of a determined space in this comparative area, it was established a name for this occupant role. The research of qualitative character was done in a number of state public schools and used as instruments, the documentary analysis and the questionnaire applied to the directors. Starting from the speech of the directors about their practices, it was noticed that the activity or situation that is imposed determines the type of role to be played by them, exactly because the roles are linked with the function to be exerted, meaning that each activity will demand a type of role to be played, justifying the coherency, contradictions and incoherencies found out in the answers of the directors, that made possible the categorization of them in four groups of directors: the legalists, the oscillating, the critical and laissez-faire. But, whichever the role attributed to this director of state public school of São Paulo, he plays a special role in the school that he manages, even if he does not have this intention.
