RESUMO

Assuming that behaviour depends on image, the present investigation explores different forms of aprehension of the building within the traditional area of a town, constituted by its original nucleus and early expansions, within which a historical site has been identified. The study examines both the images and the desires for the preservation or transformation of the said area in the view of the townâs inhabitants and of patrimony specialized architects, through their representations of the buildings within the historical site of the town of ParnaÃba, an old city on the coast of the state of PiauÃ, which grew at the time when the cattle trade in the Brazilian Northeast was at its peak. By applying Moscoviciâs Theory of Social Representations as a theoretical basis, Facet Theory and Multiple Classification for the research design, and MSA and SSA Multidimensional Techniques for the analisis of the data, it was possible to identify two views of the preservation of the historical sites which had been hypothesized at the onset of the project, namely: a lay view based upon experience, and a technical view based on patrimonial doctrine, both strongly influenced by the date of the buildings. Some of the old buildings, due to the hegemonic form of their representations by the groups under study, were interpreted as cultural representations; others, shred by one group or the other through its use or shape, were interpreted as emancipated representations; and those not shared by the groups, or by individuals within the groups, were interpreted simply as individual cognitive representations
