RESUMO

This dissertation analyzes the distribution market of oil products in Brazil, considering its historical evolution and its determinants in the context marked by the deregulation ocurred at the beginning of this decade, seeking to identify relevant points of a competitive strategy for the large participating companies on this market. To support this analysis it is presented the historical evolution of the brazilian and world oil industry, emphasizing the action of the main economic agents and its effects on the market structure. It s also exposed the characterístics of this industry and the steps of the productive process exploration, production, transportation, refining and distribution with emphasis on the oil product distribution. This step is analyzed through the presentation of a) its historical development and the transformations ocurred afier the deregulation of the sector done by the brazilian government in the early 90 s; b) the formation and dynamics ofthe oil products consumer market; c) the evolution of the distribution companies market share. The analysis ends with an exposition of the main competitive forces that act on this market and the economic and financial performance of its main companies BR, Shell, Ipiranga and T exaco in the 92 throug 96 períod, pointing out the competitive advantages that the companies should develop in order to maintain themselves on the market in a long-Iasting way, despite the tough competition ofthe 90 s
