RESUMO
The MunicipalTheatre of São Paulo, inagurated in 1911,wasa response to the paulistanaelite s longingto have their city equiped with a grand opera houseas befitting to it s position in the country, representing an urban centre with the first nationalindustries and coffee barons. Its construction, that took eight years to complete, was undertaken by engineer Ramosde Azevedowho,as wellas beingresponsible for the project, oversawthe buildingwork until its completion. The buildingwas part of a collection of works resulting from the accelerated growth of a city in full expansionand to facilitate it, large areas needed to be dispossessed and a considerable area of the city centre urbanised. It was the first monumentof this scale undertaken by the publicauthorities. The majestic buildingwas inspired by the grand L Opera in Paris, designed by Charles Garnier half a century earlier, which, in itself, confirmed its status of eleganceand goodtaste. This work r-etraces the period of 1911-1938and, in particular, the theatre s mainprogramme, in an attempt to understand the Municipal ssocialand cultural functions withinthe city. In the course of this period, two moments are focused on: first, the period in whichthe theatre served as a display windowfor the traditional forces of the city to show themselves, and second, whena modernist-Iedgroup aspired to give it a newdirection
