RESUMO

The supervised practical training placement represents one stage in the academic experience of students of the physiotherapy course. It gives the students their first contact with the professional practice. The student applies the theoretical knowledge studied in the university, and develops technical and personal skills. OBJECTIVE: To describe the changes in the speech of physiotherapy students, concerning stereotypes related to the mentally disabled at the beginning and at the end of the traineeship at a psychiatric unit of a general hospital. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive study, in the format of report of experience, which includes the analysis of material from the interviews with students of physiotherapy at the beginning and end of their traineeship with psychiatric patients. The analysis focused on identifying prejudice and stereotypes about mentally disabled people. The study was supported by a theoretical framework on social psychology, in particular, the work of Agnes Miles and Henri Tajfel. Some negative stereotypes of the mentally disabled were identified, evaluating the feelings awakened in students, during their contact with the patients, and identifying some prejudices expressed towards mental disability. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The prevalent image of the patient, for students prior to the traineeship, is widely associated with a dominance of instinct over rational thinking, mental confusion, impulsive action, a lack of hygiene, and adequate personal appearance, isolation, disorganization in day-today acts, and difficulty forming interpersonal relationships. After the traineeship, these prejudices were broken, and a sense of social integration appeared, with a greater willingness to interact with the patients. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The supervised practical training placement with psychic patients gives the students an opportunity to improve their technical skills, communicate better, and develop empathy during the patients? treatment. After the practical training placement, the students threw aside their preconceived notions, and were prepared to accept the patients better, establishing a mutual relationship of trust with them. Providing integral care for the patient, with a minimum of obstacles and a maximum quality, leading to their well-being and effectiveness of the service offered
