RESUMO

This study is concerned with young people and adults, in their first years of schooling, about the concept of number, in situations of interactive teaching and research. The knowledge of number they have and their elaborations, starting from this knowledge, are analysed through situations of counting. The solution to this involves elementary abstractions of natural number concept not systematized by written representation. To the elaboration of these activities, we are based on the historical evolution of number in a conceptual approach of teaching and learning. In this study we have the role of a researcher-teacher. We have made an interpretative analysis of notions shown up in "episodes" which have been either written or recorded.. From this analysis, it was possible to make clear that the adults and young people who have been studied don t show the domain ofthe most elementary abstractions ofnumber concept but, on the other hand, they have a knowledge ofnumber in daily use
