RESUMO

The cutting bovine livestock has a privileged position in the Brazilian economy and its international trade. The beef world market went through significant transformations during the last decade. From 2004 on, Brazil surpasses Australia as the largest beef exporter in the world. The conquer of new markets contributes to absorb the constant growing of productivity that the beef chain as a whole has been achieving during the last years. Such scenario has improved the Brazilian commercial balance. The world beef exports have grown 5.6% from 2000 to 2004, and Brazil, Australia, Canada and the USA are in the top of the list. Regarding the imports, the growth of the market in the same period was of 8.3%, and USA, Russia, Japan and the European Union are the largest importers in the world. This Master Thesis analyzes the main transformation which are happening in the Brazilian beef industry as well as other links of the productive chain for the global insertion of Brazil. The focus of the thesis is the exports of in natura beef. The exploratory method is the research tool for this thesis, through bibliographic revision and descriptive research. The main instrument of research was the interview to the meatpacking plants which export and which are among the four largest exporters of beef in Brazil. In general, the local meatpacking plants still present low levels of profissionalization, a situation which is being altered with the advance of the exports. The meatpacking plant industry goes through significant transformation to respond to the market requirements and demands. Such scenario contributes to the the modernization of the management, the logistics, technology and business structure in general.
