RESUMO

Considering the conception that competencies are comprised with three components - attitude, skill and knowledge - this study analysed the relation among some aspects of the Reference s competencies. The purpose was to investigate the relations between the opinions of professionals with master and PhD degrees in Library and Information Science and university librarians that were in the VIII Seminário Nacional de Bibliotecas Universitárias (1994) regarding: desirable attitudes, skills and the necessary knowledge. Also, to investigate relations of the competencies with: function performed, conception of the main role of Reference, intellectual production, professional activities and job satisfaction. The study was based on the information of 116 professionals with master and PhD and 102 university librarians. The results showed that the individuais work mainly in the Circulation and readers services; there is a possibility of disfunction of Reference due to the lack of diversity of the activities develop. Job satisfaction of professionals with master and PhD that work in Reference seemed compromised although they showed intellectual production related to Reference. The conceptions of the main function have been divided in to four categories: access to information, user satisfaction, orientation and generic answers, with SIGNIFICANT STATISTIC DIFFERENCE with mean lower for professionals with master and PhD; attitudes classified in cognitives, behaviour and affective with difference with mean higher for professionals with master and PhD; skills valued differently unless for the skill to conduct interviews with mean higher for university librarians; and more homogeneous knowledge for university librarians. The results suggest that the relations founded to the evaluation of competencies, most of ali, are not following the theory s parameters of the area
