RESUMO

The characterization of seed banks is an important subsidy to the conservationist action in forests. The main objective of this dissertation was to examine the soil under the canopy of Santa Genebra Forest (22°49 S 47°06 W Campinas, SP. For the presence of viable seeds by, sieving, air fluxing and sprouting seedling techniques. Samples of 900ml of soil(Eighty nine) were collected in the drought season with a metal sampler (30 x 30 x 5 cm) and then placed in aluminium trays in the greenhouse and the number of seedlings counted. The total area sampled in the Santa Genebra forest was equivalent to 8.01m2(0.3m x 0.3m x 89 samples), that represents 0.001% of the total area. The amount of seeds/m2 was 75,7 ± 7,8 seeds/m2. It was detected presence of species from early stages of succession by the sprouting seedling technique. Among the dispersion syndromes, Anemochoric was to syndrome more expressive, followed, respectively, for zoochoric and autochoric with smaller percentile
