RESUMO

The thematic role of Agent and Patient are the target of this study of whose objectives are characterized them based on the given Portuguese language in the domain of the verb, considering the global predicate and situational context in prototypical and non prototypical semantic properties, in the perspective of Lexical Semantic and a representational approach or mentalist; in a descriptive comparative study of texts of Archaic Portuguese and Contemporary European Portuguese in oral and written modalities, to list the verbs that occur with the different types of Agent and of Patient, looking for any changing situations on the level of the thematic structure of the verbs, and to describe the syntactics configurations of the Agent and the Patient, in a diachronic approach that focuses on the relation between the syntax and semantics. In the bibliography on the subject, the Agent and the Patient receive variable definitions, sometimes inaccurate. In the study, trying to better understand these notions, is presented in one classification for Agent and the Patient, working with six semantic properties: trigger, control, intention, cause, affected and experiencer. In this form, is proposed two types of Agents: prototypical Agent and affected Agent, and three types of Patient: prototypical Patient, experiencer Patient and agentive Patient, in the continuum that goes from Agent and the Patient more prototypical goes to the Agent and the Patient less prototypical. In the point where is presented in the continuum the Agent less prototypical, is when begins the prototypical Patient, and, vice-versa, in the point where it presents the Patient less prototypical, that is the agentive Patient, and when begins the Agent more prototypical. Listing of the verbs that occur with the different types of Agent and of Patient in analyzing the diachronics corpora, it was not verified that there are any changing situations on the level of the thematic structure of the verbs; however, it was possible in relation to the agentive Patient to trace a particular group of selected verbs. In relation of the syntactics configurations of the Agent and of the Patient, it was found that there are some changes in the history of the Portuguese, and, comparing the oral and written language, it was verified that there are some differences.
