RESUMO

Cordel literature is poetry born from the oral traditional of Northeast Brazil, known especially for the written production and respective typographic register of the booklets. Both the improvised texts and the booklets pertain to a grand oral text in which poetic diction, cultural universe and, especially, traces of orality converge. Communicational processes occupy a privileged position. In the last ten years, with the emergence of the home computer, cordel poets began to hold poetry competitions via e-mail or chat rooms on the web. These disputes in verse are then published and have come to be called virtual showdowns. Such editions follow the tradition of cordel poetry showdowns in which the poet imagines a fictitious dispute between two repentistas [improvising singer-poets] and transforms it into a booklet. Poetic improvisation also occurs with the mediation of the computer and Internet. This practice of imaginary cordel showdowns first appears in old titles from the early 20th Century. The tradition of these written disputes stems from the poetry challenges of two improvisers in front of an enraptured audience. The question therefore arises: Is there a continuum that unites the diverse modalities of Northeast Brazilian improvised poetry and cordel literature? In the corpus of this research, there are a set of booklets published in the last hundred years, above all, in the last decade; poetry performance events, records of virtual showdowns on the web; CDs and DVDs on poets in the grand tradition. In the methodology, participant observation and qualitative analysis of the grand oral text that is carried out in the virtual showdowns on the Internet and by means of electronic mail, in the literature of the booklets, at festivals and public gatherings in Northeast Brazil is compared to other regions of the world. From the concepts of performance and movement (Paul Zumthor), semiosphere (Iuri Lotman), the grand oral text (Jerusa Pires Ferreira), concept of communication (Jesús Martín-Barbero) and cyberculture (Francisco Rüdiger), the study outlines the existence of a set of orality poetics that pertains to the space/time of the last ten years (Pernambuco/Northeast/Brazil - 1997/2007) stemming from the experiences of century-old poetic constructions interacting with the experiences of improvised and/or non-improvised poetry in cyberspace. Besides being a grand oral text, this set of poetic constructions is a grand communicational text immersed in a semiosphere the culture of the Brazilian Northeast
