RESUMO

Intranets provide access to corporate information, systems and tools for cooperative work. In corporate environments, intranets have been important resource for knowledge management. Intranets are heavily Web-based environments, where the demand for an item is generally performed by a search engine followed by manual navigation. Most users have difficulty in formulating appropriate consultations to improve the accuracy of the research that is taking place. Thus, it is common that users start their searches using a general query and use the navigation to refine their search until they find the desired information. This paper introduces Conceptual Navigation and it presents NavCon, an architecture that implements it. Conceptual Navigation makes use of a concept network, previously organized in the form of ontologies, to provide mechanisms that are able to optimize users Web navigation. Ontologies provide a context in which the user is inserted while browsing the Web. The use of a context provides resources to reduce the retrieval of unnecessary information, helping the user to keep focused on his task. For the implementation of the Conceptual Navigation, an architecture is proposed. The architecture suggests the use of dynamic links included on Web pages to access the concepts of an ontology. The web page mark-up service is implemented in a proxy. From a link, it is possible to navigate through an ontology graph of concepts and their relationships. From this graph, a user can access an address list that contains documents related to a selected concept. Keywords: semantic web, conceptual navigation, knowledge management
