RESUMO

Reflecting upon the issue of female-headed households means keeping in mind that we are dealing with an extremely diversified object, including the fact that the very context in which it exists - the family (or the families?) is in itself complex and full of different forms and meanings. Starting from an empirical survey among 32 black women who are heads of families residing in neighborhoods located at Subúrbio Ferroviário, on the outskirts of the city of Salvador, Bahia, we have carried out this work with the main objective of understanding how some of the principal subordination axes articulate in the exertion of family headship, and to what extent those dimensions signify greater difficulties or, paradoxically, an opening of possibilities towards new ways of refleting upon the family and the role that women play, especially in our context, black impoverished women, both in the private realm of relationships and in the public dimension. The reflections in this work also aim to call attention to the deconstruction of the poor thing myth, which gained strength with the discussions around the feminization of poverty. Therefore, the analysis that is proposed allows one to reaffirm that the female heads of families are not twice or three times affected by the inequalities, but rather affected in a distinct way that can only be understood when all the aspects of inequality come into play, not superposed but interrelated.
