RESUMO

This qualitative research has the objective of analyze how a woman-mother-university teacher lives the job/academic career together with the exercise of motherhood. What can the seizure of roles to attend the demands of the domestic space specially the motherhood and the academic job mean to the constitution of the feminine identity? How can she overcome the social conditionings and make her wills and virtues become worth? These were some initial questions. The historic-dialectic approach subsidized by the oral story was used. The leading line of this discussion was the life story of five teachers of a public university in the interior of the State of São Paulo, with an average age of 45 years old. The strategy for collecting data contemplated the life story telling and the reflexive interview. The data analysis was directed by three plans; identity, work and gender and systematized in two axels: the story of ?each of them? and the story of ?all of them?. This latter resulted in the empiric categories. The theoretical references that supported this discussion were: Berger and Luckmann (1991), Ciampa (1994), Habermas (1983), Goffman (1963), Foulcault (1984, 1986), Heloani (1991, 1997, 2003, 2004), Kergoat (1089, 1996, 1997, 2002) and Sarti (1997, 2002). The analysis showed that the job gives them professional satisfaction, maintenance of family standards and gives them a private sense of honor and assertiveness as individuals. But it also showed to be seductive and slaving and thus competing with the role of being a mother. The argument was that an identitary crystallization of the character professional/provider fetichized by the stereotype of the ?successful woman? was created originating the myth-identity and the mandatory need for being successful professionally, being an exemplary mother and proving to be strong. However this self-assertiveness as a professional can be shaken because it is subordinated to both the family and the relational universes that validate, support and maintain all individual accomplishments. It was also discussed that the changes at work in order to attend the flexibility and the rationalization of the academic work in a neo liberal context, hinder the constitution of autonomous identities, making the process of emancipation not viable and keeping the conflict capital-work covered. Motherhood represented an inflection point in all the stories. While exercising this role, these women realize the difficulty to face the traditional model. And the limits established by the motherhood to their professional/provider character is the triggering element of a sort of questioning in relation to this character. That instigated these women to reflect about themselves, their work, their relationship with their husband/partners and kids and from this reflection came some awareness and the necessity of changing
