RESUMO

For the purpose of determ1n1ng the modifications of tensile strength and of the d1fferent levels of macromolecular or1entation in collagen bundles due to mechanical stimuli, rats were submitted to different experimental treatments, such as physical exercise and mus­cular denervation. After these treatments the Achilles tendons of animais were subm1tted to b10mechanical and blophys1cal experiments. The analysis of the stress-deformation curves indicated that the tendons of trained animais presented superior RUPTURE TEHSIOH and ELASTIC STIFFHESS parameters in comparison to the1r controls. The form birefringence curves of collagen bundles in these tendons also showed na increase of aggregation state and macromolecular orientation of the extracelular matrix elements, while maintain1ng the crystall1n1ty levels. Average values of RUPTURE TENSION were even h1gher in the tendons of denervated animaIs. An acentuation in the profile of the Form B1refringence Curves was also observed 1n these tendons. The finding of the biomechanical and biophysical modifications can contribute to the understanding of the probable control mechanisms of both the syntesis and aggregation state patterns of the f1brous elements of extracellular matrix
