RESUMO

Although Traffic Generating Centers (TGC), as is the case of Higher Education Institutions (HE Institutions), have fostered city development, they may lead to the worsening of traffic problems (motorized and non-motorized) on urban roadways. Thus, both general TGC impact studies as well as those specifically related to HE Institutions, are important in providing subsidiaries for actions destined to minimize problems arising from the setting up of Traffic Generating Centers. This study aims to establish measures as well as develop trip generating models for the main modes of transport used by higher education commuters in the Federal District: automobile and bus users as well as pedestrians. With a view to identifying intervening variables in generating user commuter trips, a method was specially elaborated. Further, a profile of commuter trends, developed by the TGC research group, part of the Postgraduate Program in Transport Studies at the University of Brasília was also considered in this study. This method included instruments and procedures to be adopted in data collection and analysis related to trips made by students, professors and staff and other information from these HE Institutions. Results indicated that among the explicatory variables tested only the number of students was statistically representative in showing the number of traffic observed (simulated and produced). Also, changes in the mode of transport were considered. The bus commuter group expressed most interest in switching to automobiles. The study allowed for an overall categorization of higher education student travel patterns. At the same time, it was not possible to draw up a similar categorization for professors and administrative staff given this groups time constraints to collaborate in this research study.
