RESUMO

In this work a finite-difference time-domain method formulation to the analysis of propagation characteristics in bidimensional dielectric planar structures (slab waveguide and directional coupler) is presented. A direct solution of Maxwell s equations is searched, replacing the partial derivative enc1osed in the differential operators by finite differences. To reach this solution it is necessary to discretize space and time, in the form of space cells and time steps, respectively, to obtain the finite difference equations that will simulate the wave propagation desired. The formulation was developed to analyze linear nondispersive materials. The theoretical aspects involved in the analysis of the structures and the FDTD method are initially discussed and then the results obtained in the simulations are presented
