RESUMO

The finite difference in the frequency domain (FDFD) formulation is used to examine the effect of an asymmetric geometry on the dispersion characteristics of coupled dielectric waveguide structures. The FDFD method is applied to the scalar wave equation in terms of the transverse components of the magnetic field. As a result, an eigenvalue problem is obtained, without the presence of the spurious modes, due to the implicit inclusion of the divergence of the magnetic field equal to zero. Dispersion curves of various asymmetric coupled dielectric waveguides structures were examined including embedded dieletric waveguides and diffused dielectric waveguides. The dielectric uniaxial anisotropy was also considered, including the particular case in which the optical axes of each of the two coupled dieletric waveguides perpendicular to each other. Several curves are presented and they may be of great value in the design and use of these waveguides
