RESUMO

This is an experimental work which uses the concept of informational entropy for digital image analysis. The researched literature shows that the informational entropy concept is used for image analysis, but the photographic equipment available in the market is not discussed. The aim of this work is to offer ,for photographers mainly, an experimental functional method for analyzing the quality of digital photographic systems. Two high resolution digital systems, 22 and 23 megapixels, were used and their images were compared to scanned photographic images. The obtained values for informational entropy indicate that, in the majority of the test situations, best results are obtained by digital systems in comparison to film based ones. Digital reflex cameras, with 6,10,14 megapixels were also used in the analysis. Different objective lenses were tested and the results indicate that more modern objectives give better results when used with more modern digital cameras. Older digital cameras, such as Kodak 14n (14 megapixels) produce images which quality depend less on the objective lenses used. The work also proposes the determination of the informational entropy in RGB in a way which is not found in the bibliography: informational entropy is tested in synthetic and photographic images. Finally, it is proposed that informational entropy should be used as a control parameter in digital image treatment, mainly for the use of sharpening filters.
