RESUMO

Based on Brazilian Portuguese acquisition data, this study shows children using different resources of expression of agent indetennination. In a age-span ranging ITom 3 to 5 years old, there is a reduced number of periphrastic passive constructions ("foi feito") which can be characterized as standardized/crystallized formulae. The function ofthe agent indetennination is being fulfilled by altemative construction such as ergatives, verbal periphrasis with "estar +[ V + _do]" form and topic construction. In ergatives, V+N type structures, with N corresponding to the affected object through the change of state or place, make up most of occurences. In relation to the second structure, the child uses it in contexts in which the resultative imperfective Aspect of the referred verbal fact is marked. Using a topic construction, the child stands out another N, which is not the agent in initial position of the sentence. The syntactic constructions with agent indetennination are also current in the adult interlocutor. The few occurrences of perphrastic passive phrases found in the adult speech reinforce the idea that these structures are more representative of the written modality than the oral one. The profusion of agent indetermination resources found in this child s speech questions the hypothesis of cognitive mapping that postules the notion of thought reversibility (according to Sinclair, 1973). The data show that the linguistic solutions found by the child to indetennine the agent/subject appear in the adult-child dialogical situations in which the agent responsible for the occured change (many times the child itself), is not mentioned. In this way, we could say that are specific interlocution situations (including the notidn of agentivity) which contribute to passive linguistic subsystem reorganization in the child s speech
