RESUMO

This work focuses on whether or not there is a specific property of the Language Faculty which could be essential for the language acquisition process, beyond the parametric variation in Universal Grammar. Our theoretical framework is the Principies &Parameters model, in its Government &Binding version, as well as in the Minimalist Program one. Our starting point is how parameters were conceived, as well as which notion of parameter the Minimalist Program has assumed. We also discuss the learnability hypotheses usually associated with the Generative framework, assuming the continuist one. After briefly discussing the inner workings of the Minimalist Program, we show how a minimalist framework can offer the language acquisition area a fresh point of view by specifying a clearer place for syntax and for its relationship with the performance components. Having this picture in mind, we propose that the basic syntactic relation that is privileged by the child acquiring his / her language is ccommand. Our hypothesis is conceptually motivated since this type of relation is already present in the Language Faculty. In order to empirically sustain our hypothesis we examine some phenomena in Brazilian Portuguese, as well as a cross-linguistic phenomenon observed in the production of small children: the asymmetry between subject and object
