RESUMO

This research is delimitated by the social dynamics of the population settled in the municipality of Itaete, in Bahia, and it is centred in their ―territorialization‖ as a process of development. The period 1997 to 2007 is divided in two singular moments, the fight for land and the nesting, which are observed by different social structures: campers and nesters. Both moments confirm the conflict among rural workers which represent an assortment of familiar production that take from land a value of use and life and large state and agro-business which represent the non-productiveness or the specialized and uniform cultivation that take from land a value of exchange and accumulation. The usual conflicts are considered an inherent element to the ―territorialization‖ process, which moves the space and enlarge social groups. The fight for land is a social workers struggle for their ―territorialization‖, mediated by Agrarian Reform politics. The agrarian nestings are comprehended as fractions of territories which are permanently in construction by the use of appropriation and production of spaces in order to guarantee life reproduction. The process of ―territorialization‖ of the nested population in Itaete invites the ―production‖ to extrapolate its restricted sense and advance to other ―spaces‖, beyond conquered land. The encampments and nestings allowed a convergence of social strength, with the power of changing the goals of local politics. The settled population testified the importance of Agrarian Reform in creating opportunities for employment and income, better life quality in the country and consolidation of citizenship, which indicates politics as a development impeller. This development, nevertheless, offers a proposition that considers the way of living as a component of the production process, including the diversification of production and multi associated systems which cooperate with the nutritional replacement of the soil and consent to several alternatives: what cant reach the market price is still valuable to the family table or the animals in the yard. The territorial construction of the population settled in Itaetê, through the production of spaces for work and life, gives them comprehension of their capacity to transform reality and also transform themselves
