Literatura e identidade cultural em MS : algumas fronteiras e a (des)identificação com o Pantanal

RESUMO

Four years after the creation of Mato Grosso do Sul, José Couto Vieira Pontes wrote his História da Literatura Sul-Mato-Grossense (1981). At the time of its release, Pontes’s work showed a very particular indication of the culture sul- mato-grossense: after the state division, a kind of disturbing search for its own cultural identity takes place. This search is able to distinguish MS from Mato Grosso not just political-geographically, but also culturally. The semantic features that come from “Mato Grosso” evoke a close relationship with nature, particularly when this look goes into the state; in the case of MS, the most celebrated or even the most recognized by the media artists have their products linked to such a stereotype: concerning to the music, Almir Sater, with his Trem do Pantanal, and in the literature, Manoel de Barros, whose production is common and often mistakenly limited to the Pantanal universe. Since 1999, we noticed an emphasis in the necessity of identity affirmation: it was spread, from the state government, the idea of a referendum to change the name of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul to Pantanal. This idea caused great controversy and even today, the alleged link between MS and Pantanal remains in promotional government material. If we consider the assumptions of cultural hybridization in Latin America, the assertion of this difference as a process of constitution of identities and even the cultural diversity of Brazil, the resolution of the identity issue in MS is far from being solved, since we search, ignoring the multiplicity, the sedimentation or even construction of a single cultural identity throughout the state. Assuming that the process performance / production is twofold - the speech represents and produces identities - the objective of this paper is the discussion of the process of cultural identification in MS, through the literary production of the regional authors.
