RESUMO
Objective This study aims to inquire the level of knowledge of graduate and post-graduate students at Piracicaba Dental School concerning the attention given to patients with cardiovascular diseases. The sample consisted of 75 individuals, from whom 24 were graduate students (Group A), 26 were professionals and continuing education students (Group B) and 25 were professionals and post-graduate students (Group C). All individuals answered a questionnaire of 12 questions developed in order to inquire the level of knowledge of the subject. Chi-square test and Fischers exat test were used to compare the proportions of the answers among the Groups. Results The results showed that both students and professionals value the vital signs evaluation before each treatment although most of individuals do not verify respiratory frequency and body temperature. Most of individuals indicate lidocaine 2% with epinephrine 1:100.000 for local anesthesia. They show midazolam as the best option due to the decrease of surgery stress and they point out respiratory depression and paradoxical effects as the main disadvantages for the use of this benzodiazepinic for sedating patients. They showed lack of knowledge if an interaction between epinephrine and nonselective beta-blockers occurs as well as the use of emergency medication for an arterial hypertensive crisis. Although the possible cardiovascular complications caused by the treatment of these patients have been quoted they could not define basic life support and barely knew the compression external cardiac compression/mouth-to-mouth ventilation in the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Conclusions It is necessary to stimulate changes in the objective of the behavior, the period and the teaching strategies of the graduation course at Piracicaba Dental School as well as the courses offered for the professionals during continuing education courses emphasizing basic life support and CPR training.
