RESUMO

The objective of this paper is to understand the gender in some romances by Francisco J. C. Dantas, including the images of masculine and feminine in the book Coivara da Memória (1991), Os Desvalidos (1997). Oriented to the analisis of these books this paper studies the fictional speech of Francisco Dantas, to understand culture and gender of the northeast of Brazil in the mid of the XX century, in an agricultural and patriarchal society, the tensions , traditions, and modern world focused in the young people, dominated by the socalled coronéis (the owners of land) and farmers. Faithfulness of couples and excess of authority in marriage are also studied in this paper. In the sociological field, this paper is focused in society, fiction and reality, to estabilish a connection with literature. It is not, however, a faithful reflex of reality of the northeast and its people. It is known that the patriarcal society is in crises in the northeast of Brazil in the work of Francisco Dantas.
