RESUMO

This dissertation focuses on artisans and their production, addressing aspects related to the nature of their activity; their life trajectory; and the dissemination of the handicrafts they produce. It is an empirical study of handicrafts as a social phenomenon and their relationship to local development. The object of this study is research on master-craftsman from the Sisal Territory in Bahia, Brazil and on their popular knowledge. The object of this research is a mapping of master-craftsmen, detailing their popular knowledge in order to recognize, value and disseminate to society the popular arts and trades present in the State of Bahia. The dissertation seeks to contribute to a systematization of popular artisanal knowledge which is understood both as a social technology in itself and as part of networks and centres of chains of production. Its methodology is a combination of historiography, life history, audiovisual recordings, bibliographic research and documentary research. The product of the work is a proactive overview of activities based on a field investigation conducted in the Sisal Territory in Bahia and on observations collected during a Social Residency Programme in Lisbon, Portugal.
