RESUMO

The purpose of this work was to verify the superficial microhardness and the compressive strenght of VIDRION R (SS WHITE) and VITREMER (3M) glass ionomer cements, Type II, stored at 37°C and 100 % relative humidity for 15 minutes, 1 hour and 24 hours. For the superficial microhardness test were made five samples from each material, in temperature (23 ‘+ OU –‘ 2°C) and relative humidity (50 ‘+ OU –‘ 10 %) in controled environmental. The materiais were ratio and mixing in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions and placed in plastic mold with 6 mm in diameter and 1.8 mm in height. The samples were stored in dissecator at 37°C and 100 % relative humitidity. The values of superficial microhardness (KHN) were determined by indentations (DURIMET) with load of 50 weight by 30 seconds, totalizing five indentations in each sample. For the compressive strength test were made ten samples for each intervals purpose, according to Association Dental American especification n# 9, in temperature and humidity controled environmental. The mixing of the powder/líquid ratio was realized according to manufacturer s instructions. The samples of VITREMER glass ionomer cement (activaction triple) were polimerized by visible light with a VISILUX 2 (3M) unit, by 40 seconds and after stored in a dissecator at 37°C and 100 % relative humidity. The compressive strength was obtained by LOS machine (GERMANY), with load of 100 kg/min. The superficial microhardness and compressive strength values were submited to Tukey s test at 5 % confidence leveI. The storage time increased the values of superficial microhardness for the two materiais ( p <0.05). In each storage period, the values of superficial microhardness did not show difference statistically significant for the two materiais. The storage time increased the values of compressive strenght of cements (p <0.05). However, the values presented by VITREMER glass ionomer cement were statistically higher than the VIDRION R cement, in alI periods.
