RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to analyze comparatively the nucleus rnorphometry of prostatic cells m 20 patients aged between 57 to 85 years oid, with or without catheter, prescribed to prostatic sbrgery, and selected from November 1998 to May 1999. Ali the patients were operated on and divided into two groups: 1 Owith catheter and 10 without catheter; the treated group and the control groups, respectively. A thousand cell nuclei of prostatic glands were studied; 500 of them were from benign prostatic hyperplasia patients withcatheter, and 500 without catheter. The nuclei were evaluated according to their size and shape. Morphometric techniques showed values significantly reduced of the maior, minor and medium nuclear diameters m the Treated Groups (11 .67mm, 7.09 mm and 9.02 mm) in relation to the Control Groups (15.05 mm, 8.38 mm, 11.lOmm) (p=O.0000 p=0.0052 p=O.0001. respectively). The mean values of nuclear volume, area and perimeter showed significant reduction in the Treated Group (4.21 mm~ 66.0 mm and 30.0 mm) compared to the Control Group (7.74 mm, 99.4 mm and 37.76 mm) (p=O.0001 p=rO.OOOl and p=0.0000 respectively). That significant reductjon of mean values in the Treated Group was similar to the contour value (3.75 mm) and volume/area (6.0 1 mm) in reiation to the Control Group (3.84 mm and 7.40 mm) (p=O.042; p=O.OOO1, respectively). The mean values showed no significant differences according to the shape, eccentricity and shape coefficient of the nucleus cells of prostatic gland between the Treated Group (0.76 mm and 0.89 mm) and the Control Group (0.78 mm and 0.86 mm) (p4.37 p=O.06, respectively). As to conclude, the catheterism showed to reduce the nuclear arca of prostatic cells in benign hyperplasia, consequently deobstnicting the prostatic ductus.
