RESUMO
The influence of annealing treatment, performed at temperatures from 600 to 1300 °C, and cold work performed by tensile at 10 and 20%, on the mechanical and corrosion properties of an ISO 5832-9 austenitic stainless steel used for orthopedic implants manufacturing has been studied. Has been performed chemical analysis, optical and scanning electronic microscopy, and hardness, tensile, fracture toughness (CTOD), potentiodynamic anodic polarization, pitting or crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion, and fatigue-corrosion tests. The results for the material in as received condition showed microstructure, mechanical and corrosion resistance in accordance which the ISO 5832-9 standard and better than other conditions studied in this work. The condition 20% cold worked showed high corrosion resistance and fatigue-corrosion resistance higher than as received condition, but on the other hand, the fracture toughness is very low for using the material in this condition. Simultaneous decrease in fracture toughness and corrosion resistance was observed for 800 and 900°C treatments. This effect was attributed to Cr2N and phase chi (x) precipitation. The phase chi (x) precipitation occurs more intensively in 900°C and Cr2N precipitation occurs more intensively in 800°C, for the conditions studied in this work. Decrease in mechanical resistance and increase in fracture toughness was observed for conditions annealing at 1100, 1200, 1250, and 1300 °C with increasing the treatment temperature. Decrease in fatigue-corrosion resistance has been observed for 1300 °C treatment. The increase in fracture toughness was attributed to increasing the displacement between partic1es. The indicate temperature range for annealing studied in this work is from 1000 to 1100 °C, i.e., higher than the carbide and intermetallic phases precipitation range and lower than the high grain growth range
