RESUMO

Mood disorders are amongst the most prevalent psychiatric disorders and the most commonly diagnosed and thoroughly studied syndromes are Major Depression, Dysthymia and Bipolar Disorder. It is a group of diseases of great global importance in public health, affecting millions of people around the world, impairing life quality and presenting high rates of suicide. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of the influence of stressful life events (SLE) and of the genetic predisposition in the mood disorders (Major Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder and Dysthymia). 52 outpatients were selected at the mental health unit from the Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Pernambuco and submitted to two questionnaires for assessment of SLEâs and the family history for mental disorders. To correlate the variables analyzed we used the Spearman test and to make a comparison between genders, within each group of disorder, we used Mann-Whitney test and the SPSS program. In all groups the correlation between the total number of SLEâs and the total number of episodes was positive and the analysis between the number of SLEâs of the first episode with the genetic risk for the group of Major Depression was not significant , but there was a trend towards a negative correlation. These preliminary results showed that there is a relationship between the SLEâs and the three diseases studied. However, we need to extend more studies to better clarify this interaction between environment and individual
