RESUMO

The solid residues produced during construction and demolition are generally considered useless and cause several social and environmental impacts when not disposed appropriately. Solid residues are often deposited irregularly, result in obstruction of drainage systems, and cause the proliferation of vectors of diseases. Some experimental programs undertaken in several parts of the country and worldwide have demonstrated the viability of the use of construction and demolition residues, particularly the residues constituted of concretes, mortars and ceramic elements. These residues have been used in the production of recycled aggregates and application in pavement construction. This thesis deals with the establishment of indicators of potentialities and performance for the use of these aggregates in flexible pavements. The experimental program consisted of laboratory and field tests, all of which were applied to an experimental track. The base and sub-base of the experimental track was constructed employing recycled aggregates. Two samples of typical solid residues were collected in the municipal district of Goi?nia ? Goi?s. The first sample was comprised of concrete residues. The second sample was comprised of ceramic residues. The samples were crushed separately and grouped in three distinct grain size distribution fractions. The laboratory tests were performed with each type of recycled aggregate, with the mixture of both, and with the addition of clayey soil. Based on the laboratory analyses, some parameters were determined. The constitution of the grains of the recycled aggregates was determined by visual analysis and pH analysis, indicating the possible resistance increase with the time. The final texture of the mixtures and the internal porosity of the grains of the recycled aggregates were also determined. The porosity between of the aggregates was measured. This porosity determines the behavior of the mixtures. The resistance of the grains was determined by abrasion Los Angeles indexes and by examination of the degradation after Proctor compaction. Finally, California bearing ratio and resilient modules were measured. An experimental track 56 meters in length was built in the end of 2003, using mixed of recycled aggregates and local clayey soil at the base and sub-base layers. The recycled aggregates used for the construction of the experimental track were produced in the Municipal quarry of Goi?nia, were crushing took place. The experimental track was monitored during the construction phase and during approximately three years of operation. The results of the field tests indicated good structural conditions of the pavement and the technical viability of the application of recycled aggregates from construction and demolition in flexible pavements. Good indicators of performance of the pavement were also obtained from Benkelman beam measurements, plate load tests, dynamic penetration indexes, the non drained resistance obtained by the dynamic penetrometers of cone and Panda, and the Pencel pressuremeter and geogauge moduli.
