RESUMO

This research had the main objective to indicate priority humid areas for the conservation of the biodiversity of aquatic birds in cross border river basins, as subsidize for the shared management. As a study case it was opted to work with the river basin of the Lagoa Mirim (Brazil-Uruguay), internationally recognized by its importance for the migratory waterbirds. This same basin also presents a strong human aspect by the activities of farming, represented for the production of cut cattle and for the rice fields. These two aspects are the ones that make the local economy runs. In the last few decades the aggravation of the environmental questions has affected all the sectors of the society and to search solutions with sustainable basis of ecosystems is urgent. In such a way, It had been boarded in this referring work, aspects of the geopolitics of cross border river basins in the South America, conflicts between conservation and economic development, environmental analysis of cross border river basin and conservation of priority areas for the migratory waterbirds. All the analyses had been made in geographic information system, which make possible a mapping of these humid areas in an integrated way with others components of the landscape, as much it how much economic conservationist point of view. The results present a scene that requires immediate actions in both countries, action these that must be managed in shared way
