IdentificaÃÃo arqueolÃgica de um naufrÃgio localizado no lamarÃo externo do porto do Recife

RESUMO

The aim of this present work is to identify a wreck located near the south channel that access Recife harbor, with 12m deep and turbid water, almost all over the year. Was done preliminary underwater surveying of the archeological site, was taken photos, as well as a film, in a day which visibility was exceptional, besides gathering superficial vestige, in order to classify temporal wreck space. The gathered material, film and photo analysis took us to conclude that the wreck had occurred between 1750 and 1850. Having this primary data, it was started a bibliography research, in order to find out the number of shipwrecks that happened in the harbor and surroundings sites. It was found a universe of 15 ships, from most varied nationalities, sizes and finalities. After studding the history of each one of these shipwrecks, there were only three with possibility of being the object of this research. By the other side, it was studied Recife harbor history, the type of ships that came to moor, what kind of construction technique was involved in ships, what type of wood they used, what kind of merchandise they were bringing, finally, everything that could be related in order to give answers to the questions of this work. In order to context better this work, it was made researches about the causes of the shipwrecks; the topography of the harbor adjacent area; the currents and winds of the area all over the year; kind of sediment that occurs in the archeological site area; fauling happen in the wreck and modify it and the reason why Recife harbor was so looked for since the discovery until nowadays. To execute the underwater works, it was formed a group of students-divers who fulfilled all qualification in diving and successfully developed their mission. The site work consisted of confection of a bathymetrical chart of the area, sediments collection, collection of vestiges using semicircular weeping technique, besides perpendicular and lines measurements, subaqueous drawing of archeological site in PVC bord, and cross-checking prospecting. It was concluded that the cause of the shipwreck was due to fire on board, but it was not possible to identify elements to point with certainty the name of the ship.
