RESUMO

The concept of hypermedia has been discussed both in the specialized and non-specialized literature only recently, but its history is relatively lengthy, because it is connected to the concept of hypertext. A multimedia system is the gathering of information from various media into a system. If we extend this concept with a computer and the possibility of accessing that information in a non-linear form, we have hypermedia. The media can be sounds, static or moving images, text and biomedical signals. This dissertation presents a computer software to aid in the process of hypermedia system design: HyperCASE. This system is intended for planning, analysis, and documentation of hypermedia systems, with emphasis in projects for biomedical use. The system has the following general features: complexity fractioning - the user s data are aggregated into groups, according to the user s specifications; adequacy to the biomedical user - the software has features to facilitate its use by the biomedical user, who can be little skilled in informatics; graphical interface -necessary because we are working with various kinds of media. The methodology developed was based in CASE (Computer Assisted Software Engineering) and object-oriented database concepts, in order to fit better to hypermedia concepts. The software was created in Visual Basic Professional, version 2.0, for Windows, for use on IBM-PC AT 386 compatible with 4 Mb and VGA monitor, with mouse. There are six classes of objects: texts, sounds, images, signals, links and screens. The purpose of the last class is to serve as the basic storage and presentation unit for the others. In other systems this class is called card (Hypercard) or page (Toolbook). The link class connects two screens. Each class has its own particular attributes, and the user s data constitute the various occurrences of each class. To test this methodology and software, we have developed a hypermedia project in the field of ecocardiography, for the purposes of teaching the fundamentaIs of ultrasound scanning of the heart. The project used alI types of classes in order to demonstrate the validity of the methodoIogy and HyperCASE software
