RESUMO

The aim of this work is to study the selective hydrogenation of citral to geraniol and nerol over Ru-Sn based catalysts supported on Ti02 or AI2O3. Some aspects were focused, namely, support; addition of Sn; effect of Sn content and effect of reduction temperature on catalysts supported on T1O2. Futhermore, this work aims to get some information about Sn and TiO; interactions. The catalysts were prepared by impregnation. The Ru load was kept constant for all samples. The alumina supported bimetallic catalyst was prepared at Sn/(Sn+Ru) atomic ratio of 0,7. This ratio was varied within 0,1 and 0,7 for the catalysts supported on TiC>2-Basically, X-Ray Fluorescence, Temperature Programmed Reduction, O2 Chemisorption and Mossbauer Spectroscopy were used to characterise the samples. Reaction results showed that: - unsaturated alcohols can be produced over Ti02 supported catalysts even at low reduction temperature. Besides, by-products formation is impeded; - AI2O3 revelead not to be a suitable support as by-products are produced; -addition of Sn increased the selectivity but, on the other hand, catalytic activity was reduced; - catalysts supported on T1O2 and reduced at 400 °C were more selective to geraniol and nerol but less active than the samples reduced at 250 °C. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the promoting effect of Sn on the selectivity is associated with tin oxide presence. The good selectivity achieve with catalysts supported on Ti02 and reduced at 400 °C is atributted to TiOx species which can migrate to the metal surface along the activation step allowing the C=0 selective hydrogenation. Moreover, the results suggest that there is a sinergetic effect between Ru, Sn and Ti02
