RESUMO

This research focuses on General Gymnastics, a non competitive activity in expansion in Brazil, with the aim to place it in a context and justify it as a Physical Education knowledge area. The action fields of General Gymnastics, its contents and the structure of Gymnastics in the world were deeply analyzed from the Gymnasticsuniverse and its concepts. The present study gathers data which have turned possible a new vision of General Gymnastics in the world, in the American Continent, in Brazil and finally in the academic context having as a basis the experience of 8 years from the Research Group -Grupo Ginástica Unicamp, this thesis presents the General Gymnastics conception which is developed and difIused by that group and is based on two principIes: the formation of human values and the formation of abilities. This conception has corporal culture as the study object, and the social interaction as the orientationparadigm. The methodology of this study was developed from the gathering and analysis of data which carne from different sources as: 1. interviews with Brazilian and foreigner gymnasts, teachers, coaches and Gymnastics directors; 2. observations at: international Gymnastics festivals, Danish clubs and schools, meetings and courses on General Gymnastics and videos about the elaboration process of Grupo Ginástica Unicamp choreographs. As a complement to the research, depositions were collected from members of Grupo Ginástica Unicamp based on the question: What is the meaning of your participation as a member of Grupo Ginástica Unicamp? An analysis of the depositions content was carried out and categories were elaborated, concerning the aspects of the formation of human values and the formation of abilities, which made the interpretation of the results possible. This study justifies General Gymnastics as a Physical Education knowledge area and reduces the lack of specific bibliography in this field in Brazil, besides offering a suggestion for the application of General Gymnastics in schools and in other different institutions
