RESUMO

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate till what point a monitoring and analysis performance interface, based on business intelligence technology, would benefit the task of managing by critical success factors, a transportation company. Regarding the theoretical and practical attributes of this research, it was developed a conceptual approach about the process of strategic management and its relation to more recent concepts of business performance management systems. To better model the interfaces, it was used concepts related to the most adequate charts and layout specific to strategic and tactical trough the use of visual modeling software. Under its methodological perspective, it was used the qualitative case study approach. The main data gathering techniques used consisted of interviews, questionnaires and document research. Data analysis embraced the description and the semantic interpretation of document content, interviews and a questionnaire. It was observed in the company that some critical success factors did not have its respective key performance indicators for adequate measuring, as the utilization of more operational and lagging indicators. By the other side, a fine balance between financial and non-financial indicators. In respect to the monitoring interface, the findings indicated a drastic reduction on retrieving data time, faster navigation and interpretation, and also a better form to communicate information. Under the analysis perspective, it was detected a substantial time reduction to retrieve data, more flexibility to compose and evaluate different scenarios, as much as a better visualization of the changes impact in hierarquically or directly connected indicators with real-time graphical response in the same screen. The methodological choice and the reduced time to make the study implies on restrictions to generalize research findings. By presenting a simple way to model performance management interfaces, this thesis makes a concrete contribution in search to solve the chronic problem mangers of small and mid-size companies face, the absence of strategic information
