RESUMO

This paper researches autobiograpbical writing in the context of the end of XIX century in Brazilian literature. The analysis has in its base the intimate writing of Lima Barreto in its various forms, in particular, Diário do Hospício and the unfinished novel O Cemitério dos vivos. These are the results of bis personal experience in the National Alienated Mental Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, in the period between 25th December 1919 and 2nd February 1920. The singularity of these works in our literature resides in the angle of observation of the narrators, which develops within the mental hospital. While they go into madness sphere / domain, in the space idealized for psycbiatry in order to "cure", this experience develops dark and dramatic dimensions. Those confessions - fragments of the Lima Barreto intimacy collected there or in bis memories of the outside world - reflect the Brazilian way of life in that period. This relation between biography and art enlightens one of his dear presuppositions, a literature undertaken with the social - telling bis own pain and marginalization is also a way of articulating the pain and exclusion of the other. This kind of confessional prism, projected from bis whole work to the society, unveils bis announced and executed project, the literary militancy and the total sincerity, ideas which contribute to the construction of the huge mosaic of Brazilian culture and literature
