RESUMO

The rapid growth of portable electronic devices with applications in distinct areas (telecommunications, medicine, engineering) as well as ambiental factors created a huge demand on compact, light, low cost power sources This demand stimulated the development of thin film technologies for the production of the main parts of batteries, generating the concept of microbatteries. In this work one of this components is studied: the cathode. Hence, thin films of molybdenum oxide and molybdenum/nickel oxides were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering in distinct deposition conditions, aiming their use in rechargeable lithium microbatteries. The influence of the variation of the deposition conditions on the structure, composition and performance of the materials was studied. In the case of the molybdenum oxide films, the amorphous, sub-stoichiometric compounds presented a high specific capacity (178 µAh/cm2 - µm for a current density of 1 µA/cm2 ). The results concerning the molybdenum/nickel oxides showed that the sample with lower Ni content presented the highest specific capacity (152,5 µAh/cm2 - µm for a current density of 1 µA/cm2) showing up the viability of the utilization of these materials in microbatteries
