RESUMO

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the factors related to dental caries prevalence and verify the dentist performance related to preventive educative aspects in students. The epidemiological survey was conducted with trained and standardized examiner, in a representative sample of 925 students, twelve and eighteen year of age, ITom public (n=700) and private (n=225) schools. A questionnaire and a clinical examination (DMFT index) were carried out. The results indicated that lower DMFT index were found: twelve year of age, male gender, higher social economic class, dental visit attendance each six months, no changing of dentist, dental healtl} brushing instructions when taught by mothers. Find out that a minority of students know or use preventive methods: mouthrinse, topical fluoride gel and dental floss. Students of higher social economic class attend more regularly dental office. Students that changing of dentist showed higher DMFT index, besides of no using preventive methods. This way we can confirm that the students need more attention of the dentists. Because the preventive methods: mouthrinse and topical fluoride gel are being done by lower percentage of students, besides of brushing instructions are being done by mothers and not by dentists
