RESUMO

The infant mortality rate in the insufficient birth weight (of2500-2999g) is 2.5 times the rate of that in the favorable weight group (3000g or more), its incidence is high and its causal factors are little studied. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between maternal risk factors recognized as causing low birth weight (less than 2500g), and its effects on the insufficient birth weight (IBW). In 1998 a case-control study was carried out in the Maternity of Campinas, Campinas-SP, ITom 15th of june to 18th of december, with 1002 singleton live births at term with IBW (cases) and 1002 with favorable weight (controls). Mother s newborn at term (between 37 - 42 week s gestation) of IBW and subsequent mother s newborn at term of the favorable weight were interviewed. Multiple Logistic Regression Analisys was applied in order to estimate the adjusted Odds Ratio. The maternal risk factors closel yrelated to insufficient birth weight were: urinary tract infection during pregnancy (OR=1.327; 95% IC 1.027- 1.714), smoking during pregnancy (OR=1.483; 95% IC 1.148- 1.914), total gestational weight gain <8Kg (OR=3.001; 95% IC 1.990- 4.527), total gestational weight gain 8 - 12Kg (OR=1.849; 95% IC 1.451- 2.357), maternal prepregnancy weight <50Kg (OR=1.790; 95% IC 1.408- 2.275), insufficient birth weight in prior pregnancies (OR=1.382; 95% IC 1.011- 1.889), and IBW in prior pregnancies and low birth weight in prior pregnancies (OR=3.882; 95% IC 1.393- 10.817). The study shows that there was a relationshipbetween risk factors for low birth weight and insufficient birth weight such as smoking during pregnancy and total gestational weight gain <12 Kg, in this population.
