RESUMO

The contemporary society is established over the market, the efemerality and the spectacle. At the same time, and according to such state of things, the virtual reality imposes itself as a new universe in the configuration of the experience, so that literature - especially poetry - come to loose room despite ideologies and political movements towards the valorization of reading. In this context, the work of Manoel de Barros appears as an incongruity. He is the only live Brazilian poet who is a bestseller, reaching such a level of acceptance and identification from the readers part. How can a poet of modern phraseology represent a sales phenomenon? In what way and to which extent does the image of Barros goes around and is built by the public? Above all, what does that mean in the relationship between literature and society? Those questions motivate the analysis of the character and the production of Manuel de Barros, which may present hyphotesis of the poetry language resistance in the society of the spectacle.
