RESUMO

Forestry companies such as pulp and paper, steel and timber producers, require fast and accurate methods to be applied in a large number of samples for characterization of their raw material. The Near InfraRed Spectroscopy-NIRS is a technique considered fast, non-destructive, applicable in products whose molecules contain mainly CH, OH, NH, HS or C=O bonds. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate, through near infrared spectroscopy, the wood properties of Eucalyptus urophylla planted in a descendent test in the Station forest of Kissoko in Point-Noire, Republic of Congo. The laboratorial methods and the statistical analysis were carried out at La Maison de Technologie of the Centre de CoopÃration Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Development (CIRAD), in Montpellier, France. The calibrations to predict the chemical and physical wood properties have been adjusted from a representative set of 60 samples in terms of spectral information and physical and chemical characteristics. The calibrations for estimating the wood properties of these trees presented coefficients of determination ranging from 0.65 to 0.88 and ratio performance to deviation from 1.7 to 2.9. These models were used to estimate the properties of 280 unknown trees.
