RESUMO

The purpose of this research was to test the performance of a constructed macrophytes wetland in the reduction of organic material and solids clearance of wastewater characteristic of the banana candy processing. There are few reports about the use of constructed wetlands in the treatment of wastewater from food processing and none of them refers to its kind of application. In this work the wastewater contains water used to wash tanks. It was used a subsurface flow constructed wetland system with Typha sp, a macrophyte encountered in many regions of Sao Paulo state and efficient in this kind of treatment; gravels (stones) were used to support plants and three configurations were studied to the constructed wetlands: two rectangular wetlands placed in series, one rectangular and one cylindrical; which were built-up in cement tanks. The system performance, measured in terms of COD (Chemical Demand of Oxygen), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), was estimated according to percentage of reduction of these parameters. Moreover, it was determined phosphorus and nitrogen quantity (Total Kjeldahl, organic, amoniacal and nitrite + nitrate) in the influent and effluent constructed wetlands. The climatic conditions were registered and it was verified its influence on the system performance. The results show that this technology can be applied to this wastewater. It wasn t observed significative difference between cylindrical and rectangular form.
