RESUMO

The performance of alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment to enable the enzymatic hydrolysis of sugar cane bagasse was evaluated. The objective is that the fermentable sugars obtained be used to ethanol production. 23 factorial designs were performed to evaluate the influence of pretreatment time (h), temperature (°C) and alkaline hydrogen peroxide concentration (alkaline H2O2) (%) on hydrolysis performance, which was measured by glucose and total reducing sugars (TRS) release. The designs were performed using the bagasse as it comes from a sugar/ethanol factory (bagasse not screened) and bagasse screened to -12+60 mesh. The objective was to evaluate the influence of particle size in the release of the fermentable sugars. The results have shown that the best glucose yields were obtained for not-screened bagasse. A new factorial design 22 + star configuration was performed to determine the pretreatment conditions that lead to maximum glucose release after enzymatic hydrolysis with celulase and _-glucosidase at temperature of 50 ºC and pH 4,8. In this stage only not-screened bagasse was used and the considered factors were temperature and alkaline H2O2 concentration. Pretreatment time was eliminated from the design because it was not considered statistically significant in the earlier stage. The obtained results show that in the new evaluated range, influence of temperature on glucose release after hydrolysis was also not significant at the 90% confidence level. Optimum conditions of pretreatment were determined, 1 h of reaction, temperature of 25°C and H2O2 concentration of 7,355%. The results of ART and glucose mass after 48 h of hydrolysis was 0,4899 g/g raw dry biomass and 0,3740 g/g raw dry biomass, respectively. The glucose yield in the optimum point was of 84,07 %
